It’s almost everyone’s dream. To be able to earn a passive income online while they sleep, so they can have the freedom to spend their time as they wish. No more having to work every day from 9 to 5. No more having to work under a boss. No more working a job you couldn’t care less about. Passive income opens the doors to all this and more, yet few people ever achieve it.

I can confidently say that the reason so few people earn a passive income is because the work involved with learning how to do it right and then actually implementing it is too difficult. Either that, or they don’t even know it’s possible to earn a passive income online instead of working a 9 to 5 job.
I’m here to clear up all the confusion around the process, and I will be giving you my top recommendation when it comes to earning a passive income online.
First Off, what is Passive Income?
Passive income refers to income that is generated without doing any work. But, in order to get to that point, it takes a ton of work up-front.

A common example is writing a 20,000-word long eBook, which is no easy task by the way. But once it’s published, you can sit back and relax while watching your PayPal account fatten up nicely. As the sales are rolling in, you are making passive income. It took a lot of sweat and tears to get there, but in the end, it was worth the effort.
How Can One Earn a Passive Income Online?
For this, there are several options. Some are better than others, and I’ll elaborate on each one so you can a good idea of how they each work.
Write an eBook – like I just mentioned, this could earn you some decent passive income but it takes lots of initial work. On top of that, the scenario I painted above is a rare case. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people are writing eBooks all the time. The competition is stiff, so you need to do a ton of legwork in order to get any sales. Otherwise, your eBook will be lost in the crowd while the “gurus” in your niche keep making sale after sale.
Sell your photography – Are you any good at photography? If this is your thing, then you might want to try this idea. What you can do is take good stock photos (they can be of anything), and sell them on websites like Fotolia for several dollars each. Better yet, make your own photography website and let people use your photos for free. You can actually earn a passive income with this by placing ads on your site. You can get a LOT of visitors this way, since people don’t have to pay for your photos. If you get a lot of traffic, which is sure to happen if you’re any good at photography, you can make a full-time income from ads alone.
Sell your designs – If you’ve got some design talents, it’s possible to turn that into a full-time passive income. You can actually design things like t-shirts and mugs, and websites like Cafepress or Zazzle will do all the hard work of marketing, manufacturing and shipping. Yep, it’s entirely passive income for you.
Search the internet – Okay so this is more of a fun hack a lot of people don’t know about. In no way can you earn enough to pay the bills using this method, however it is passive income (or should I say “passive pocket change”?). Anyway, there are websites that pay you to use THEIR search engine instead of Google. A few that come to mind are Swagbucks, Qmee, and even Bing – yes, Bing!
Those are Nice, but What About the BEST Way to Make a Passive Income Online?
So, even though there are tons of great ways to make a passive income online, definitely the best way to do so is through affiliate marketing. This is where you can review different products and when people find your reviews and end up purchasing the product you promote; you’ll get a cut of the sale. With affiliate marketing, you don’t actually own the products. Instead, you’re promoting other people’s products, and when you land them a new customer you’ll be compensated for it.
It’s sort of a confusing concept if you’ve never heard of this business model, so I’d suggest you read this helpful article which should clear it up for you.
One of the things I love about affiliate marketing is that the amount you can earn is truly unlimited. In fact, there are some affiliate marketers making several thousand dollars every single day. The amount you can make is based entirely on the work you put into it. The harder you work, the more money you’ll make. Simple as that.
Affiliate marketing is easy to get into if you think it’s something you’d like to do. But, in order to be successful at it, you’ll need some proper training. You can’t just start out all on your own, because you’ll find yourself spinning your wheels and will likely give up. If you want to do it right, getting the proper training is almost a requirement.
Thankfully, there’s an excellent platform called Wealthy Affiliate, which teaches the exact process of affiliate marketing from start to finish. They have step-by-step lessons which are very beginner-friendly and easy to understand. Wealthy Affiliate is actually the exact training I use, and it’s my only recommendation to anyone planning to become an affiliate marketer.

I love what you have put here about creating passive income. Ebook writing is one of the best ways to create an income. As ebooks once written demand no holidays, vacation pay or take sick days and they work 24/7.
I’m all about creating passive income. Thank you for providing some great ideas.
Hey Jagi,
Glad you liked the post. Ebooks are a good source of income, you’re right. They just require a LOT of initial work writing them but if you enjoy that, go for it! After that, you have to promote them heavily if you want a sizable number of sales. The promoting is even more difficult than writing the eBook in the first place, in many cases.
Thanks for your comment. I’m happy you found some good ideas here. 🙂
